Accounting for cafes and restaurants

For Australian cafes, restaurants and takeaways: keep supplier bills, banked takings, wages and GST in one ledger, and reconcile the bank in minutes rather than at the end of the quarter.

Five things that take your time, and how Plain helps

Lots of supplier bills

Enter supplier bills with GST, approve them, and see what is due this week.

Takings and the bank

Import bank statements as CSV, OFX or QIF files and match deposits from your point-of-sale and card settlements.

Wages

Run pay runs with PAYG withholding and super, and payslips, in the same workspace.

Paying suppliers in one go

Pay approved supplier bills in one batch with an ABA file for your bank.

GST and BAS

Plain prepares your BAS figures from the ledger. You lodge them through your usual channel.

Setting up for hospitality

There isn't a hospitality starter profile yet. Start with General services and add accounts for food and beverage sales and cost of goods, or start from scratch with only the essential accounts.

What Plain doesn't do yet

Plain doesn't connect to point-of-sale systems or live bank feeds yet, and payroll doesn't apply award rates for you. Import takings and statements as files, and check pay rates against the award yourself.

Moving from another system

Read the guides for moving from Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks.

Questions

Does Plain connect to my point-of-sale system?

Not yet. Import your bank statements and match the deposits.

Does payroll handle the Hospitality Award?

No. Plain runs pay runs with PAYG withholding and super, but you set each employee's pay rates. Check them against the award on the Fair Work website.

Do I need a card to try it?

No. The trial is 14 days free and you don't need a card to start.
