A month-end checklist

A short close each month saves a long one at the end of the quarter or the year.

General information only, not accounting, tax or legal advice. Check with your accountant or the ATO where a decision depends on your circumstances. Written 30 October 2026 · last checked 30 October 2026.

The checklist

  • Reconcile every bank and card account.
  • Enter or approve all bills for the month.
  • Send or void every draft invoice.
  • Review money owed to you and chase overdue invoices.
  • Review bills due next month.
  • Check payroll was posted and super is up to date.
  • Check GST codes on unusual transactions.
  • Look at profit and loss against last month and last year.
  • Note anything for your accountant.
  • Lock the period once it's right.

In Plain

Today shows what still needs attention, and every change after you close is kept in the audit history.
